Why do people plant a garden? Gardening is one
of the most popular activities in the world today; for some it is a hobby,
for others a necessity. Some people plant flowers, while others prefer vegetables
or fruits.
A
garden can satisfy your creative urge, or be an investment in recreation
and good health. Landscaping your yard makes your house more attractive and
increases its' value. People grow their own fruits and vegetables because
they want more wholesome, fresh, chemical-free, delicious food. The price
in a grocery store may be cheaper, but consider the value of gardening. Think
of the wonderful outdoor exercise, the satisfaction of picking your own vitamin-packed
vegetables, and the joy of sharing the garden's bounty with others. Gardening
is worthwhile because it helps create health, happiness, and peace of mind.
After a day of stress you enter your quiet, happily growing garden,
and almost immediately there is an easing of tension.
Having
your fingers in the dirt is relaxing. Its relaxing qualities can be compared
to kneading bread or making mud pies; both are said to have therapeutic value.
You see your problems in their proper perspective and soon you are at peace.
One reason gardening appeals to me, is because when I am outdoors surrounded
by growing things, I feel especially close to God. I love watching little
seedlings grow! I also enjoy soaking up the warm rays of sunshine and absorbing
my daily quota of sunshine vitamin D. This is all about the miracle of life.
There are many things to learn about gardening. Some topics are: improving the soil, planning a garden, selecting seeds, maintaining favorable growing conditions, dealing intelligently with insects and disease, harvesting the crops, and cooking and storing vegetables. Gardening can be both challenging and fun!
